تهدف هذه المقالة إلى تطوير إطار مرجعي نظري لدراسة وتقييم جذور تاريخ الأفكار في العمل الاجتماعي. تنطلق هذه الدراسة من اعتبار العمل الاجتماعي نشاطًا عمليًا ومهنيًا، وفي الوقت نفسه تخصصًا علميًا. وتؤكد المقالة أن وصف وتحليل الخلفية الفكرية للعمل الاجتماعي يجب أن يكونا متجذرين في التطور التاريخي للعلوم الاجتماعية. يرتكز الإطار النظري المقترح على متغيرين أساسيين لعبا دورًا محوريًا في تطور الأفكار داخل العلوم الاجتماعية، وهما: العلاقة بين النظرية والممارسة، وطبيعة المشكلات الاجتماعية. وتُعدّ المشكلات الاجتماعية موضوعًا مركزيًا لدى المفكرين الكلاسيكيين. ويمكن استخدام الإطار النظري المطوَّر في هذه الدراسة من أجل: 1) بناء تصنيف للمفكرين الكلاسيكيين ووكلاء الفعل الاجتماعي بهدف تنظيم أوجه التشابه والاختلاف بينهما، ودراسة المسارات الفكرية التي أدت إلى الفكر الحديث في العمل الاجتماعي. 2) تبرير اختيار بعض النصوص الكلاسيكية واعتبارها من كلاسيكيات العمل الاجتماعي. وبذلك يمكن استخدام هذا الإطار النظري كأداة لتوليد الفرضيات في البحث العلمي في مجال العمل الاجتماعي.
