The Role of the Contrastive Approach in the Translation Lesson

Abstract

Scientific methods play an important role in governing language, and in determining its rules and use. It is certain that linguistic studies gain their academic legitimacy through sound scientific approaches. For this reason, linguists must be familiar with these approaches, and their convergent and divergent features, to be aware of their usefulness.

Our study is based on the identification of some well-known linguistic approaches, to highlight the chronological changes that have occurred, alongside the growing interest in linguistic studies among linguists. We will focus on the “contrastive approach” to show how this approach was able to deal with the linguistic problems encountered by linguists, particularly in the field of translation. In this study, we will rely on the comparison of Arabic as the source language and French as the target language, to note the morphological and grammatical differences between these two languages.

At the end of our study, we concluded that the contrastive approach is important for translation, making it the most important way to look out for morphological and grammatical differences between the two languages of the translation, with the aim of avoid imbalances that occur in the translation of texts from Arabic to French.
