The Homeland as Reality, Aspiration, and Vision in Imam Musa al-Sadr’s Discourse and Public Practice

This study analyzes how the concept of homeland developed in Imam Musa al-Sadr’s discourse and public practice in Lebanon between 1959 and 1978, and how it relates to citizenship, sectarianism, social justice, and nonviolence. It asks how al-Sadr conceived the homeland simultaneously as a plural reality, an ethical and institutional aspiration, and a vision of coexistence and a just state. The study employs historically contextualized thematic content analysis. Its primary corpus consists of al-Sadr’s two volumes of press interviews, his speeches and lectures collected in Musa al-Sadr and Humanistic Discourse, Marching in al-Husayn’s Procession, and The Alphabet of Dialogue, while secondary studies are used to establish context. Texts were purposively selected when they explicitly addressed homeland, citizenship, sects and sectarianism, deprivation, peace, and defense; they were then coded into semantic themes and compared across different stages of the discourse. The findings show that homeland is constructed as a reciprocal bond of rights and duties, while a just state and balanced development are necessary conditions of national belonging. Al-Sadr also distinguished between religious communities as a civilizational resource and political sectarianism as a system of privilege and isolation, and between rejecting weapons in internal conflict and legitimizing defense of the land. The study’s contribution lies in reconstructing these elements as one conceptual system that links discourse to practice rather than reducing al-Sadr’s thought to biography or general description. The study is limited spatially to Lebanon, temporally to al-Sadr’s Lebanese public activity, and textually to available published materials.
